A different type of house

Well... Sandy isn't quite sure what to think today! He went to a heritage park and found a very unusual building. It has grass growing on the roof, long grass! And the walls of the building are definitely not made out of wood or stone. What could it be??
Well, a peek through the window and Sandy knows that this building is a house of some sort. Through the dusty window, Sandy can see a bed and a table and some pottery, but that is about it. Who would live in a house made out of... dirt? Because upon closer inspection (and a taste test), Sandy discovers that the building blocks of this house are chunks of dirt!
Luckily, there is an interpretive sign nearby (which Sandy missed in all of the excitement of seeing the building) and Sandy learns that the building is called a "Soddy".
Hmmm... that sounds like a rather primitive style of living. Fireproof is good... leaking is not good! Sandy doesn't think he'll go out anytime soon and build himself a soddy. It is interesting what types of houses there are though... maybe one day Sandy will see an igloo! For the moment... he has to be content with checking out the crop of grass on the soddy roof... Has anyone else ever come across such a strange house?

  1. Oh, that's a soddy, Papa read a book to us about a family on the prairies who lived in one. Jerry says he thinks clumps of sod would fall into his toast and honey in the morning...Ben agrees.

  2. Yes... apparently they were quite dusty and full of bugs (ewww). It seems like your midwest isn't so different from our midwest!

  3. Hi Sandy, I think you're right, big prairie areas in both our back yards, and badlands too (we have badlands in South Dakota). You have the same jacket and hat as Ben, maybe we're distant cousins, wouldn't that be fun!!
